Post-processing of components contaminated with chromium VI

Safe containment, reliable filtration and controlled material flows

During the manufacture and post-processing of metallic structural components, surface coatings containing chromium VI-based primers may be used. If adhesive film residues or coating residues need to be removed as part of post-processing, this is often done using mechanical methods such as grinding or scraping.
This can generate fine dust containing chromate, which is harmful to health and therefore places special demands on occupational and plant safety. The work must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of TRGS 561.

The aim is to establish a sealed-off processing area that:

  • enables the safe post-processing of components containing chromium VI
  • minimises exposure to hazardous dusts
  • ensures black/white zone separation
  • prevents the spread of chromates into adjacent areas.

Technical concept of the deconta solution

deconta offers a compact container solution for this purpose, in which contaminated components can be safely fed in, processed and then safely discharged.
The container forms a sealed processing environment with controlled air flow, integrated dust collection and a personnel airlock for the safe decontamination of staff.

Ventilation and airflow concept

Powerful ventilation and filter technology is required for the processing of coatings containing chromium VI.

  • Airflow and negative pressure
  • Operation of the work area under slight negative pressure to prevent the spread of chromate dust
  • Controlled air flow with a particle settling velocity of ≥ 0.5 m/s
  • Air change rate
  • 60 to 100 air changes per hour to effectively capture and remove grinding dust
  • Filtration
  • Multi-stage filtration technology with H13 or H14 HEPA filters
  • Optional pre-filter to extend the service life of the main filters
  • Monitoring
  • Differential pressure monitoring for continuous monitoring of filter conditions
  • Exhaust air routing
  • Exhaust air to the outside (no recirculation mode) for the safe removal of contaminated air
  • Supply air
  • Supply air system with heating and cooling functions
  • Compliance with temperature requirements in accordance with workplace guidelines (ASR)

Container – Work area

The container is specially designed for work involving chromium-containing dusts and provides a safe, easy-to-clean working environment.

Design features

  • Smooth, washable interior surfaces for easy cleaning and decontamination
  • Integration of local or general extraction for grinding and machining dusts
  • Optional viewing window for monitoring the work area

The combination of air flow, dust capture and filtration creates a safe working space for machining components contaminated with chromium VI.

Personnel airlock – black/white zone separation

To prevent the spread of chromate contamination, the container is fitted with an integrated personnel airlock.
This enables controlled entry and exit from the work area.

The container solution from deconta creates a safe, quick-to-install and compliant workplace for processing components containing chromium VI.

The combination of:

  • controlled negative pressure
  • a high air change rate
  • HEPA filtration
  • integrated airlock solution

enables safe processing of components whilst protecting staff, the surrounding area and production areas.
